Better known for its classics, the Stratford Festival has long presented fine-tuned versions of Broadway musicals. This year: “Billy Elliot” and “Little Shop of Horrors.”
Kiss Me Kate is a musical that I have admired ever since seeing the 1987 Old Vic production directed by Adrian Noble and starring Nichola McAuliffe and Paul Jones as Lilli and Fred with the gangsters played by Emil Wolk and John Bardon. The show won two 1987 Olivier Award for Outstanding Performance of the Year in a Musical. So, it was with some anticipation I ventured down to the Watermill for the first ever actor/musician version of the show after seeing their four-star versions of Sweet Charity and Amelie.Paul Hart again directs a cast of twelve actor musicians in the intimate Watermill Theatre with set design by Frankie Bradshaw (who did excellent sets for Jerusalem there and for Sweat at Donmar) but on this occasion they fall short of my expectations. The set is unimaginative, an old paint frame and a red front cloth to denote whether we are backstage or on stage in the production of the Taming of the Shrew and the direction seems to encourage overacting and rather obvious stagey laughs. When you are trying to play a bad actor, the character must convey belief that they are a good actor otherwise it just comes across as false and hammy. The two central roles of Lilli/Kate and Fred/Petruchio are here played by Rebecca Trehearn and David Ricardo-Pearce but from their first appearance their love-hate relationship is unconvincing and the twists in their relationship are overplayed. The chemistry between them never emerges and Fred is trying too hard for laughs. The result is that the show progresses in fits and starts and does not flow. The opening number “Another op’nin, another show” is excellent with Chioma Uma leading the vocals and on violin; it is a great scene setter and gets the toe tapping early on. Equally “We open in Venice” is a wonderful ensemble celebration of old-fashioned cheap variety hall entertainment and “Tom, Dick and Harry “a fun and lively routine with Kimmy Edwards as Lois lane choosing between three suitors.Oti Mabuse’s choreography (which was consistently wonderful in the recent “Ain’t MIsbehavin’” at Southwark Playhouse) is at its very best in the opening of Act 2, with the fabulous “Too darn hot” lead by Andre Fabien Francis and the ensemble and given an extra twist by referencing the segregation of black audiences at the Ford Theatre in the 1950’s. Then “Always true to you in my fashion” builds to a lively climax as Cole Porter’s delightful music fills the venue. At other times I found the band a bit disjointed creating a cacophony as if lacking a musical director.Of course the show stopping highlight of the show is always “Brush up your Shakespeare”, here performed with great energy and clarity by Sheldon Greenland and Robert Jackson and getting the most from the multitude of puns on the bard’s titles and characters like “If she says your behaviour is heinous , kick her right up the Coriolanus”. There are some great tunes in this Cole Porter classic musical although it feels a bit dated in its story for today, but the use of actor musicians failed to add to the show (presumably saved on budget!) and inhibited the performances and choreography. After the success of Sweet Charity and Amelie it may be time to give the format a rest.Review by Nick Wayne Rating: ★★★Seat: Stalls Row F | Price of Ticket: £28
Kirti DayaIt’s finally Tech Week and you may think that you’re ready to move into theatre, but honestly by now, who even remembers anything that happens off stage? Here’s a checklist for backstage essentials!1. Pins, pins and more pins! Bobby pins, hair pins, metal pins, if you can name them, you need them! Pins become a sort of currency backstage, that’s how in demand they are. There’s no harm in taking a couple hundred because you best believe, by closing night you will have exactly four (4). 2. Spare clothing. This includes nude underwear, socks, leg warmers and your biggest hoodie. In between tech runs, it’s easy for your muscles to cool down which is definitely something that we DON’T WANT. You may need to run onto stage at any given moment and the last thing you need is a cramp. Most dressing rooms also have showers and it’s quite helpful to freshen up in between runs. 3. A mini medical aid kit. We’re not just talking bandaids and antiseptic. Tech week means it’s time to bring the big guns. Heat rub, anti-spasm medication and muscle relaxants is what you’ll need to help you get through the week from hell, and do it with a happy body!4. SnacksThis may just be me, but I get quite hangry if not fed for 5-6 hours. Which is quite the dilemma during tech week as more often than not, a performer cannot afford the luxury of time spent eating full meals. Cue snacks! Whether it be a little piece of chocolate or your favourite trail mix, I find a bite here and there helps keep us all cooperative and calm. 5. HairsprayHairspray is the best invention after sliced bread. It really is THAT girl. You can use it for everything and anything, ranging from sticking down your hair to fixing your stocking ladders, under your shoes to increase grip and even stick down a pesky sleeve. A quick spritz and you’re good to go!6. Wet Wipes As somebody who bulk buys wet wipes, they’re a staple in my bag. Tech week can get quite messy and I present to you, the quickest solution. Makeup on a costume? Wet wipe it. Sticky dressing table? Wet wipe it. Partner too sweaty for your liking? Wet wipe HIM. 7. Comfy shoes With the multiple coffee runs, dressing room to side stage commutes and front of house dashes, barefoot will simply not do. Choose shoes that are easy to slip on and slip off to ensure that you’re always ready!8. Earring backs and press studs. You can never have too many earring backs on at one time. It helps distribute the weight of the earring and also secures it in place. With how small those backs are, it’s easy to misplace them in a side stage changing frenzy so it doesn’t hurt to have spare on standby!9. Notebook and pen. Let’s be honest. Tech week is a LOT. With the amount of information being thrown at you in that short a time, it’s completely normal to forget a few things. Having a notebook and pen on hand to note formations, entry and exit cues, or even slight changes in costume give you the liberty to not really pay attention then and there but rather review your notes at the end of the day and be more aware of those nuances then. 10. Your sanity. This is probably going to be the most trying part of the entire rehearsal-performance journey. Long hours, stressful tasks, and the repetition is enough to get to anyone. So remember to take a deep breath every now and then and practice patience, not just with others but also with yourself. You’ve spent weeks preparing for this, and it’s finally all coming together. You know your choreography, you know your role and the stage is ready. It’s now up to you to show us all the star that you are! Break a leg!
The feature version of the Oscar-winning short “Skin” is not simply an expansion, but, in the director’s view, its opposite.

Rust: Jeff Daniels to star in Showtime drama series adaptation
Golden Globe nominee and Emmy winner Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, The Squid and the Whale, Godless) will be starring in and executive producing Rust, the straight-to-series adaptation for Showtime. The series is based on the novel American Rust by Philipp Meyer.
Rust is a compelling family drama that will explore the tattered American dream through the eyes of the complicated and compromised chief of police Del Harris (Daniels) in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. When the woman he truly loves sees her son accused of murder, Harris is forced to decide what he’s willing to do to protect him.
“Jeff Daniels is a bona fide giant on stage and screen, and Dan Futterman is a special writer and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them together at Showtime,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment at Showtime. “With vibrant characters caught in an unpredictable murder mystery, Rust will tell the relevant and touching human story of the corrosion of the American dream.”
A series adaptation of the book was scrapped by USA Network after the channel had picked it up for a straight-to-series order in 2017. The new iteration for Showtime will have multiple episodes written by Oscar nominee Dan Futterman (The Looming Tower, Capote) who is also serving as executive producer alongside Michael De Luca and Elisa Ellis of Platform One.
Daniels is arguably best known for his roles in the TV series The Newsroom, Godless, and The Looming Tower, and for his role as Harry in the Dumb and Dumber movies. His other recent projects include Guest Artist, The Catcher Was a Spy, Allegiant, The Martian, and Steve Jobs.

It’s almost official: Keke Palmer is set to join ABC talk show Strahan and Sara as a permanent third co-host.
Page Six is exclusively reporting that Palmer is “,” which may be finalized by the end of this week.
“ABC execs are close to finalizing a deal,” a source told the site. “She’s fun, spontaneous and has great energy.”
PREVIOUSLY:
Palmer has been guest co-hosting the show with Michael Strahan and Sara Haines all summer long, including while Haines was on maternity leave. Haines returned just last week.
“Keke has been so much fun filling in, so they decided to make her an offer,” said the insider. “The audience knows her and she’s got great chemistry with both [hosts].
We previously reported that ABC execs were so and chemistry with the hosts, that they were trying to find a permanent role for her within the Good Morning America franchise. However, it was only rumored at that time.
The source added the hope is that Palmer—who turns 26 next month—will attract younger viewers and help with the show’s struggling ratings.
Strahan and Sara premiered last year as GMA Day, an afternoon spinoff to Good Morning America. It was revamped to its current format and name in January.
Unfortunately, it has still failed to even match the ratings of canceled popular cooking show The Chew, which it replaced.
It’s unknown if the show will underdo yet another name change to include Palmer’s name once she officially comes onboard.

Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 8 Recap
In the of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Dustin, Erica, Steve, and Robin joined the rest of the gang, but the Mind Flayer monster was hurting Eleven. In the Stranger Things Season 3 finale, it took a coordinated effort to infiltrate the Russian underground fortress on a mission to close the gate.
Griswold Family
A piece of the Mind Flayer’s creation was embedded inside El’s leg. After Jonathan tried to get it out with a knife, Eleven used her powers to extract it. Right then, the adults finally arrived. After everyone explained what had been going on, the adults formulated a plan using Alexei’s instructions. They would go down into the elevator to shut down the Key. Dustin and Erica rightfully pointed out they needed them to show the way. Code name Griswold Family included Nancy, Jonathan, Will, Eleven, Mike, Lucas, and Max. They were supposed to wait in safety at Bauman’s. Unfortunately, Billy was waiting outside in his car after he had sabotaged the station wagon. They ran back inside the mall, but the monster came in through the glass ceiling. Will, Lucas, Jonathan and Nancy tried to leave, and Billy almost rammed into them, if it wasn’t for Steve. They escaped, but Billy got a hold of Eleven. Lucas led the firework assault against the monster. However, it was Eleven, who reminded Billy of the memory of his mother, that finally broke through. Billy sacrificed himself to save them.
Scoop Troop and Bald Eagle
Scoop Troop, a.k.a. Dustin, Erica, Robin, and Steve, headed for Weathtertop, the hill where Dustin kept Cerebro. After directing the Bald Eagle, Bauman, through the vents, the adults were at a dead end with the passcode. It was supposed to be Planck’s constant, but the number was wrong. Dustin finally got Susie, who was real, on Cerebro. At Susie’s request, they sang “A Neverending Story” together, and she gave the right number. Unfortunately, Grigori attacked as the gate was closing. Hopper defeated him but didn’t make it out when Joyce closed the gate. The Mind Flayer’s body was dead. Because of Hopper and Joyce’s message, Dr. Owens and government agents swarmed the mall and the facility.
Three Months Later
The Meyers family was moving, and with Hopper gone, that included Eleven. Eleven told Mike that she had heard him say he loved her. She loved him too. Will donated his Dungeons & Dragons books; he could use Mike’s when he was in town and would never join another party. Joyce showed Eleven the heartfelt speech that Hopper was supposed to give her.
During the end credits, we saw a prison in Kamchatka, Russia. The guards referenced an American in one of the cells and took a Russian scientist with them. They put him in a cage and released a Demogorgon.

Adding to the growing lists of things that one apparently cannot do while Black in America, a 10-year-old Black boy has been charged with assault after he was accused of hitting another student (yes, a white student) during an innocent game of dodgeball.
Cameishi Lindley she was shocked to receive a phone call from Wayne County Juvenile Court last Wednesday (Jul. 24) about her 10-year-old son Bryce.
Lindley said she was told her son had been charged with aggravated assault as a result of an April 29th incident at his school in which another boy had been hit in the face with a ball.
Lindley described the game her son and the other children were playing at Ruth Eriksson Elementary School in Canton, Michigan as a modified version of dodgeball where players throw balls in the air.
“These kids are basically playing a game we all have played,” she said.
According to WXYZ, the mother of the child who was hit filed a police report and said Lindley’s son threw the ball at her son’s face on purpose.
She told the news station son has a medical condition that makes head injuries particularly dangerous.
“He sustained facial tissue damage to his face. He had a black eye and a bruised nose,” the mother of the struck boy said. Medical records also showed the boy suffered a concussion.
She said her son has been targeted before, and she reported it to the school in mid-April, prior to the April 29th incident.
“My son was hit twice in the face with a ball previously due to this,” the White kid’s mom told WXYZ. “The child apologized to my son and my son said ‘mom it’s okay we’re still going to be friends’.”
She said the April 29th incident was the last straw, and at that point, she feared for her child’s safety. “I tried not to let it get to this point,” she said.
Lindley told 7 Action News that neither she nor her son were aware of the other child’s medical condition, and she’s sorry he was hurt, but she feels as though he shouldn’t have been allowed to play a game like that in the first place if he has a serious medical condition.
“I am unaware of any of those situations,” Lindley said. “I’m sorry that her child got hurt. I’d be sorry for any child that got hurt.”
Lindley said her son was suspended from school for a day and she feels as though his punishment should have ended there.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she said of Bryce’s assault charge. “This is a kid that was playing on the playground with his friends.”
The case will go before a judge in Juvenile Court on Thursday (Aug. 1) for a pre-trial conference, WXYZ reports.
Meanwhile, Lindley has to assist with Bryce’s legal fees. So far, it has raised more than $15,000.

Universal Pictures is releasing Hobbs & Shaw while A24 is expanding The Farewell this weekend at the box office.
The Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta reunion concluded earlier this week and the mother of Kirk Frost’s baby outside of his marriage to Rasheeda was nowhere to be seen. But that didn’t stop Jasmine Washington from saying what she needed to say.
LHHATL Season 8 focused on Kirk and Rasheeda attempting to build a relationship with 3-year-old Kannon, the son Kirk had with Jasmine after cheating on Rasheeda.
During the reunion, the still-married couple shamed Jasmine for expecting too much from Kirk, even though Jasmine wasn’t there to defend herself.
“I think she expects me to be there like she was in a relationship,” Kirk said. “And she gotta understand, it was something different, and you chose to move forward with the situation, and you gotta kind of deal with it.”
Rasheeda co-signed with her husband of 20 years, blasting Jasmine for choosing to have a baby with a married man, as if Kirk had no part in creating little Kannon.
“You had a child with a married man and a family. He’s not gonna change his structure for you,” she said. “He never made you think that sh*t from the beginning! So don’t think now that that child is in place that everything is gonna change. It’s not.”
Jasmine—who says she was uninvited to the reunion—took to social media to tell her side of the story. In the now-deleted post, she said she doesn’t ask for much and called Kirk and Rasheeda “TV parents” who barely see her son and only used him for a storyline.
“I was told I was uninvited to do the reunion bc I no longer allowed these 2 to film with my son & act as if they really be spending time with him in real life,” she wrote.
“They are tv parents. I expect Kirk to be there like a f-king father. Let’s start there. I dnt ask for much! But surely you can take out an hour of your ‘busy schedule’ to see him for his bday or pick him up for example.
“Damn, maybe even a 30sec phone call from your daughter’s phone to wish him a happy bday? Is that me wanting y’all to change your ‘structure?’?? Is that me expecting you to be there like we’re in a relationship??
“Not 1 of y’all wished him a happy bday but act so concerned about everything else when the cameras rolling. I dnt even gaf that sis wants to hold me more accountable than her husband, but KANNON ain’t do sh-t to none of y’all.”
A post shared by (@theshaderoom) on Jul 30, 2019 at 4:32pm PDT
Jasmine went on to claim that Kirk and Rasheeda faked the scene that showed Rasheeda finding secret text messages from Jasmine on Kirk’s phone. She says she doesn’t even have Kirk’s number.
Jasmine continued to paint Kirk as an absent father and vowed to continue standing up for her child with or without the cameras.
“Don’t know what storyline world you live in but better believe having a child does change everything. Or should if you’re an active parent! Just say you want to continue making excuses for Kirk sis,” she wrote.
“Y’all just trying to move on and live like Kannon doesn’t exist but he’s here and his mother is gonna fight for every bit of respect, love and appreciation he deserves. Now you may continue with your fake a- reality show that no longer cares about reality.”
Neither Kirk nor Rasheeda have responded to Jasmine’s social media rant.

Eric Kripke reveals the one scene Amazon cut from The Boys
Amazon’s The Boys quickly showed a propensity for extreme blood, sex and carnage, which, to be fair, is mostly due to the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comic-series its based on. However, the extreme could have been … more extreme. At least according to show creator Eric Kripke, who revealed the one scene that the streaming service thought was a little uh…. too much for a casual audience.
“I couldn’t quite understand why considering everything else we have in the show, but: Homelander, after being dressed down by Stilwell in episode 2, was standing on one of the Chrysler building Eagles. He pulled his pants down and started j***ing off, mumbling ‘I can do whatever I want’ over and over again until he climaxed all over New York City. We shot it! Oh my God, Anthony was the BEST in that scene. Amazon seemed to think it wasn’t necessary. I thought it told me something about his psyche. To be clear, they’ve been great, that may have been the ONLY fight I lost in Season 1.”
is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about the supergroup known as “The Seven.” The show is expected to retain most of the comic’s () boundary-pushing violence and sexuality while exploring the dark side of superhero celebrity and fame.
The series stars (Star Trek, Judge Dredd) as Billy Butcher, the ringleader of the vigilantes who risk it all to go against a group of all-powerful characters, with Jack Quaid as Hughie, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Tomer Kapon as Frenchie, as CIA agent Susan L. Rayner, and Karen Fukuhara as the Female. Elisabeth Shue co-stars in the series alongside Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, and Nathan Mitchell.
